Coalition Against Socialized Medicine Releases Poll of New Hampshire Likely Voters, Finds Overwhelming Opposition to Price Controls, Medicare for All

ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 7, 2020 – The Coalition Against Socialized Medicine (CASM), a broad coalition of leading conservative and free-market groups such as the American Conservative Union, Heritage Action, FreedomWorks, the National Taxpayers Union, Club for Growth, Citizens Against Government Waste, American Commitment, and the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, released a poll today of New Hampshire likely general election voters. The poll, conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, measured voter attitudes on various health care topics and proposals including price controls and the Medicare for All proposals espoused by Sens. Sanders and Warren.

The survey’s key findings include:

  • Healthcare (23%) and economy/jobs (22%) are the most important issues to New Hampshire voters in deciding their vote for president and congress.
  • The vast majority (82%) of voters were familiar with Medicare for All.
  • By greater than a 2 to 1 ratio (65% to 31%), two-thirds of New Hampshire voters oppose Medicare for All. The majority of union households oppose it (59% to 40%).
  • New Hampshire voters reject price control policies on prescription drugs when they learn about the potential consequences.
  • Four in five (83% to 10%) New Hampshire voters oppose price control policies if they would lead to the federal government denying access to effective medicines or treatments.
  • New Hampshire voters reject prescription drug price controls (68% to 22%) if potential “savings” would go to the government or health insurers instead of being passed on directly to patients.

You can find the polling memo here.

CASM Executive Director Marc Palazzo issued the following statement:

“New Hampshire voters are some of the best-educated, politically-astute voters in the country, and they overwhelmingly oppose price controls on prescription drugs and Medicare For All. Americans reject socialism and New Hampshire is no different. They’re saying ‘no’ to a radical proposal that puts the quality of their own care at risk.”

Jim McLaughlin, President and Partner of McLaughlin & Associates issued a statement:

“The more voters learn about these policies, the less they support them. New Hampshire has always served as a good litmus test for national politics. These results show any candidate running on a platform that includes price controls or Medicare for All will have a hard time winning critical swing states necessary to take the Presidency.”
