Coalition Against Socialized Medicine Statement on the USTR’s Section 301 Investigation into Germany’s Drug Pricing Practices

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ALEXANDRIA, VA, June 26, 2026 – The Coalition Against Socialized Medicine (CASM), a broad coalition of leading conservative groups, has issued the following statement in response to the Office of the United States Trade Representative’s Section 301 investigation into Germany’s drug pricing policies.

“CASM applauds the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for launching a Section 301 investigation into Germany’s persistent underpayment of cutting-edge medicines. This investigation is a long-overdue first step toward holding foreign freeloaders accountable—one that demands they contribute their fair share to the costs of American biopharmaceutical innovation.

“When countries like Germany deliberately underprice new medicines, American patients are left to subsidize the costs of breakthrough treatments alone. Every dollar a foreign government refuses to pay is an additional cost that American patients are forced to front.

“This one-sided arrangement threatens our innovation ecosystem that makes breakthrough treatments possible. The U.S. continues to lead the world in pharmaceutical advancements because of the free-market structure, which rewards risk-taking, investment, and discovery. When foreign governments abuse price controls to offload costs onto Americans, they undermine the incentives that drive our domestic innovation.

“Germany’s free ride on American ingenuity must end. Tools like Section 301 investigations are imperative to holding our allies accountable without sacrificing tomorrow’s breakthroughs. This investigation should serve as a warning to our allies—freeloading is no longer an option.”
